Nose and Eyes by gothic-icecream Nose and Eyes by gothic-icecream
This is my basic process for drawing noses and eyes - i normally fiddle around with everything a lot more but exactly what i do is hard to explain - i spend hours tweaking with the colour, contrast, saturation and textures.

One thing i should mention is that i do almost every new highlight / shadow on new layer in case i don't like it and to make it easier to adjust. I gradually build them up until it's complete and then merge them all.
I don't like heavy shading - it's unrealistic unless there's harsh lighting.

Oh and everything here is just how i do it - i've had no training or anything so i'm probably wrong about lots of things. I learn basicaly by taking a reference of something (like eyes) in different lighting, angles and shapes and drawing it over and over again until i know the structure and shading of it. Then when ive done that i can be confident in doing my own from scratch.

Anyway, hope this helps

(I'm sorry for any spelling mistakes i'm in a rush right now.)

Sorry - I've only just seen your question.
The pattern is just lots of small brush strokes around the pupil that I built up bit by bit. You can find iris pattern brushes here on deviant art to save time. Hope that helps, sorry I took so long!

From observation, it appears that the artist added a layer of slightly blurred color, perhaps white, on overlay or luminosity. I maybe be wrong, but that's just what it looks like.

I have a question.
You know that pink (salmon) part of skin/muscle, isn't it being shown a little bit too much? I looked at my classmate's eyes and at my own eyes, and I can't see that pink/salmon skin/muscle as well as here, is it really like this in real life? or is all part of your drawing style? (sorry if I confused you with my questions)

The tearducts? ^_^ Yes I think it was just how I drew them back then. It's quite an old tutorial - I think I'll re do it :) (Then again, it can depend on the person - [link] , [link] and [link] all very different) Hope that helps!

Also, thank you for the links ^^
It helped me a lot, since I'm trying to do a little revision of realistic. It has been a long time since I don't draw realistic so I didn't remember some things.

Wow this is an amazing tutorial! It would help so much if you could do a 3/4 tutorial of a nose. But thats ok if you can't. No rush. :)

I have a question about the lines in the iris..did you draw them out or did you use the smudge tool, or the burn and dodge tools? What would you say is the most efficient way of getting those details? :O

The lighter lines that appear in the third image? I just used a thin airbrush and did it by hand. The darkening around the pupil and the outside of the eye was a black airbrush on a very low opacity.
I hardly use the tools. I'll blur lines that are too harsh and might use the burn tool - VERY sparingly - if something isn't quite intense or dark enough...The brightening of the eye in the fourth image was the "colour dodge" tool which is also good to use (very lightly)over the shine in hair...but that's about it :)
Best thing to do for the eyes - because they're what people focus on the most - is to zoom in on them and do the detail by hand.
Hope that helps!

Thanks for this awesome tutorial! I do have one question, though: how did you get the reflection/shine effect over the pupil? I've been trying to re-create that look for a while now but I can't seem to do it. Thanks for your time!

You mean the square shaped light reflection? I draw a white rectangle shape, completely opaque and on a new layer, and then use an eraser on 50% to fade one end of it. Then do another smaller one to the side of it...
does this help? ^^
